I went to my first Yoga Nidra class completely unaware of what to expect. I was young, and my practice consisted mostly of power yoga and vinyasa – the higher the fitness, the deeper the stretch, the more I could push myself and compare myself to everyone else in the room, the more I liked it. I dropped in on a Yoga Nidra class at a friend’s studio, mostly to support her, but also because it was something new to me. I followed the instructions to lie down and get comfortable… then realized I was supposed to stay there and not move for 45 minutes! What?? But I was already there, I couldn’t exactly get up and leave. So I diligently followed along with the body scan, the deep relaxation, the visualization, the breath awareness. I stayed still and let my mind do the yoga instead of my body. When it was over I discovered something incredible: I felt physically just about as good, or better, than I normally felt after an active yoga class! My mind was soft and clear, my emotions were steady and calm, my body felt comfortable and relaxed in a way I had never experienced before. And so, I share this yoga nidra with you, my dear friends. Take a deep breath, get comfortable, and enjoy!
